In just six years, social housing waitlists\u00a0<\/span>grew by a whopping 320%<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the Yukon community.<\/span><\/p>\n

A new report criticizes the lack of progress in the region concerning housing, homelessness, and services, particularly in the downtown Whitehorse section. The full report on this issue, released by the\u00a0<\/span>Office of the Auditor General of Canada<\/span><\/a>, suggests that the problem is multi-pronged, but solutions are available.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Perils of Homelessness in Yukon, Canada<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a hard life not having a home. Home is where the heart is,\u201d explained Cambridge Bay, Nunavut native Phyllis, an Inuk woman who conducted an open interview with\u00a0<\/span>APTN News<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phyllis is one of approximately 200 adults experiencing homelessness in the Whitehorse section of Yukon. There are also 60 more homeless children who are additional victims of inaction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Concerns Related to Housing Access Initially Sparked the Investigation<\/h3>\n

While the homeless crisis is unfolding nationwide,\u00a0<\/span>the investigation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that produced these findings was initially the result of two main components:<\/span><\/p>\n
